satisfactory resolution
I'm happy to acknowledge that everything has now been sorted out, largely thanks to the assistance of Sally, the bookkeeper at MBC. It turns out that the problem was compounded at Shimano's end also. The kit I ordered has now been fitted to the bike, and they were even kind enough to refund my money!

incompetent shop keepers should be put into the stocks so that all the frustrated and disappointed customers can collect and throw rotten tomatoes at their heads.
This activity should be allowed to proceed for at least 7 full days without any rest periods for the "incompetents".
